In 1986, when the de Young Museum Art School closed I started the Clay Studio as a place where anyone could come to learn about clay. Now, 25 years later, I am closing the studio.
There have been many changes in location and makeup of the studio but the incredible support and energy from the studio community never wavered. Early on the guidance and labors of other teachers, Tad Sekino and Jim Stevenson, and from long time students /studio potters Shug and Hedy Matsuno, Angie Chan. Linda Trunzo, Marcia Rosser (who continues to work tirelessly), Lois Glanting, Nina Saltman among many others helped create a vibrant and vital workspace.
The final studio space would not exist if not for the efforts of Joslin Pollard, Kyle Prenzlow and especially Joyce Fujiwara who continues to give invaluable assistance and inspiration to me as well as her students while continuing to make beautiful and thoughtful work.
To all of these and to the many not named, my thanks and gratitude.

John DeLois

The Clay Studio continues to change and grow as we complete our 25th year as an independent ceramic studio. What started out as the ceramic department of the M.H. de Young Museum Art School has become one of the best equipped pottery studios in San Francisco. Our space is spacious, comfortable and conveniently accessible by public transportation.

As an educational institution our primary goal is to provide a place for exploring creativity through clay and the ceramic process whether that be pottery on the wheel or sculpture. Classes are held in a supportive atmosphere and taught by knowledgeable teachers. During open studio time students from all the classes share space and experience and learn from each other.

The Clay Studio also continues to foster development of the arts by offering studio space to artists. Within our structure there are 14 individual work spaces where professionals make and promote their art. An artist community is created through the sharing of techniques and ideas.

The Clay Studio offers beginning and continuing ceramic classes every 8 weeks and community studio time on an ongoing monthly basis.
